What to do with kids during Coronavirus?
The kids around California and Northern Virginia are out of school; now what? If you’re like myself and most parents, you’re looking for activities for your children to get engaged in that can be done safely inside the home. Especially since the state of California is now in full self quarantine mode.
Here are a few recommendations: 1. Play a board game. Whether is a traditional board game or a game on an electronic device, it can be a mind shifter. Do you have a favorite game? I love playing Scrabble on my phone. It keeps the score and we just pass the cell phone around to each other.
2. Watch a movie.
The movie theaters are closed, but you can still catch a flick on one of the streaming platforms. 3. Read a book Although many schools have released (many indefinitely), we still want to keep our children’s mind fresh and learning. Join a book club subscription. Bookroo is a great subscription (https://bookroo.com/?sscid=31k4_efxvy or https://www.bookcase.club) 4. Make a pizza Many restaurants are closed, but this is a great way to work in math and science by creating a homemade pizza. You’re able to add different toppings and add ingredients into the crust. I usually use the recipe from www.simplyrecipes.com. However, I adjust the recipe (https://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/homemade_pizza/). For instance, I add cheese to my pizza dough (about ¼ cup), ½ teaspoon of Italian Seasoning, and ½ teaspoon of parsley.
5. Take a walk/or other exercise
When you’re starting to feel closed in and bored, take a walk around your neighborhood. It's great for exercise and it breaks up the monotony. Jumping jacks are usually fun for kids and it tires them out. 6. Play Dress-Up Do you still have the costumes used during last seasons? This is a great time to bring them out and use for dress up. Create a play or skit around the costumes. 7. Naked Egg Challenge I did this challenge with my kids several years ago and they loved it. The challenge will be eye opening for your children. The details for this project can be found here (https://www.education.com/science-fair/article/naked-egg/).
8. Call or Write a letter to a relative
We’re all stuck at home looking for things to do. What about calling a relative you haven’t spoken with in a long time. I’m sure they would love to speak with you. 9. Watch the Beluga Web Cab Did you know the Georgia Aquarium set up a beluga webcam? As a friend of the whales we can watch them anytime. 10. Take a virtual tour of Yellowstone National Park Visit https://www.nps.gov/yell/learn/photosmultimedia/virtualtours.htm. 11. Take a tour of a farm (virtually of course) https://www.farmfood360.ca/ 12. Educational Worksheets Visit https://www.education.com 13. Bake Quick Chocolate Chip Cookies I'm sharing my family's recipe for Quick Chocolate Chip Cookies. Visit this blog.
I will periodically add more information to this post. Stay tuned...
