Custom photography: an investment in the present for the future. Custom photography is more of a luxury product than your entry level cookie cutter photography chain store experience. Custom photography truly is not for everyone, it requires a level of commitment, investment in time and money, forethought and planning on the part of the subject/client and requires a larger time commitment for the photographer as well.
Clients who enjoy taking a more active role in the creation of their families’ memories have the desire to have portrait art that is truly personalized. These more discerning clients have been known to budget and allot time for a custom photography session. Many clients opt for it to be a once a year special experience, some opt to have custom photography sessions done to record their child’s stages in life. Having said this, it is clear that custom photography is not in everyone’s budget, it is something that most families save for to splurge on from time to time to memorialize their children as they really are (not posed and primped in the cookie cutter studio setting).
For a few months now I’ve been driving myself and my husband crazy going back & forth on changing my business model to IPS (In Person Sales)… the fear of the unknown gets me every time. I had so many questions circling in my head, like a Ferris Wheel gone berserk, and I was paralyzed by the fear. I have worked very hard and my family has sacrificed so much for me to follow this photography dream it seemed like too much to ask to make such a major change in my business plan. What I’ve been doing has been working, actually I’ve been fairly successful, and I have many loyal clients who I love, so why “rock-the-boat”? But still this desire to take my business to the next level still existed and repelled me to push beyond my fears.
So I researched, and researched, and researched, and researched… you get the idea… for the last few months. I want my clients to have prints of the stories I captured for them to hang on their walls in their homes… great big images, printed from my professional lab with love and care… giant canvases that would showcase the story they had entrusted me to tell for them. I didn’t want all those beautiful stories on a custom flash drive or disc stuck in some forgotten junk drawer somewhere in their home with discarded mailers and broken crayons.
I want to be able to offer my clients an experience… a full-service, all-inclusive experience to remember and products to treasure for a lifetime. My clients are special and they deserve an experience that allows them to feel that way.
But still the fear of the unknown….
What if I lose my clients?
What if my market can’t bear the increase in price?
What if clients don’t understand the change or want it?
What if I have to start all over again?
Then a few weeks ago I read a blog post by another photographer that showed up on my Facebook news feed, you may have seen it on yours… it was shared, re-posted, pinned, and tweeted quite heavily…
… and something just finally clicked! This photographer was saying everything that had been thinking...and he was right!
Technology does change, all the time. Phones become out-dated, all the time. File types that were supported yesterday may not be supported tomorrow. They are already eliminating DVD drives on computers… USB drives can’t be far behind the same obsolete status. So, the time had come… I opened that future marketing plan folder, brought out those files, researched pricing again, re-did the math, and took a deep breath and set a date for rolling out the new business model for Tamieka Smith Photography, LLC.
On January 3, 2016 the new business model will begin! I’m very excited to offer this all-inclusive service and can’t wait for all of you to have a special experience to remember. Not only will I tell your story but now I can help you preserve your story for generations through attractive session and print packages. Yes, you can still have access to digital files and there are payment plans available for everyone. Sessions will include a ordering/viewing appointment catered to you where we can sit down and look at your images together for the first time. You’ll be able to view samples and a slide show of your images. I will walk you through the ordering process and answer any questions/concerns you may have. I love my job, I love my clients, I love photography… and I BELIEVE in photography. I believe that photography can evoke emotions and memories like no other media can. I believe photography is the best “historian” your family can have. I believe that photography remembers what the years forget. I believe photography should be protected, cherished, and passed down throughout the generations.
